This 5 weeks course will take you through all the stages of a production, from initial script to final DVD. It is a hands on practical skills training that will enable you to either brush up on your digital skills or embark on your own film productions. The course will cover:

• Camera operation and shooting guide
• Recording sound using external mic and boom
• Lighting
• legal rights & management
• Editing using iMovie
• Mastering to DVD

Lesson Structure
Lesson 1 Introduction to filmmaking language (framing, camera angles, camera movement and conversation shot terminology) • Shotlists • What camera should I buy?
Lesson 2 The video camera and tripod • Shooting exercise: Framing • Three Point Lighting theory • Lighting for DV DVD
Lesson 3 Manual camera settings • ‘Micing’ and sound recording • Single camera interview technique • Shooting exercise: The interview
Lesson 4 Shooting interviews continued • Introduction to iMovie and non-linear editing
Lesson 5 Editing interviews • Authoring DVD from finished edit • Clearances and legal matters

Entry Requirements
No previous experience is necessary. Students should be fluent in English.

Tutor
Tom Heycock has a degree in Film Studies from the University of Canterbury and a great depth of knowledge of the digital media world, having worked in the industry for fifteen years as a Video-Jockey, Cameraman, Editor, Motion Graphics Artist, A/V Co-ordinator and Colourist. Clients have included BBC Scotland, ITV1 Network, Camden and Southwark Councils, Glastonbury and The Big Chill music festival.
