This new Streetbook brings together, for the first time, the council’s expertise on urban design, transport planning, highways engineering, landscape design, sustainability, horticulture, play provision and fairness, in a single document. That expertise has been informed by diverse user groups and tested to ensure its relevance and effectiveness for users, providers and regulators.
Where spaces look and feel good they are essentially conducive to positive behaviours. The risk and fear of crime and or anti-social behaviour will be mitigated where the public realm is uncluttered, sightlines are clear, use is varied and users diverse. The best start for children and young people will depend, in part, on their opportunities for play, to mix, and the accessibility and convenience of the public realm to whole families. Older people, women, BME groups and disabled people also have particular concerns that must be addressed if we are to produce an inclusive environment within which individuals flourish. Measures to reduce the effects of urban pollution, increase the biodiversity of the borough, and promote walking and cycling, will also contribute to our healthy living objective.
It is our goal that Islington’s network of streets and open spaces support our diverse communities, commercial, cultural and social life making the borough a vibrant place for people to live, work, visit or simply pass through.
To get it right we need to hear from you!
